Success Profile

A Success Profile defines the unique combination of knowledge, skills, competencies and personal attributes critical for success in a specific role or job family.

Success Profiles differ from competency frameworks because they look beyond competencies. Success Profiles provide a more holistic and comprehensive profile of the successful candidate, thus enabling a better and more effective selection process. Success Profiles are often used to create job descriptions, guide behavioural interviews, generate development plans, aid in selection for roles and promotions, and generally inform workforce planning activities.

A company may have a rigorous recruitment strategy, but if they have not developed Success Profiles that define what they are looking for in employees, selection processes may be completely ineffectual. Equipped with a clear understanding of the knowledge, skills, competencies and personal attributes that drive high performance in a specific role, a selection procedure will clarify the extent and nature of the gap between actual and desired capability. Individuals who most closely match a Success Profile will be considered best ‘fit’ for the role. Those who are mismatched with a Success Profile will struggle to meet the expectations of the role, and will require substantial development in areas where there are gaps.

Success Profiles should be created for “critical roles”, such as those that are essential to the long-term health of the organisation, typically difficult to fill, and critical for executing strategy and achieving results. Success Profiles could also be created for roles where there is high turnover.
