Competency Framework
Competencies are the observable and demonstrable behaviours that underpin high performance. They define ‘how’ high performers do what they do. Competencies distinguish outstanding performers from average or mediocre performers.
A Competency Framework outlines the set of core competencies that have been carefully selected for a specific organisation that employees need to demonstrate to achieve organisational success. Each competency has a definition and a set of behavioural indicators. These indicators describe, in behavioural terms, the actions required to demonstrate a particular competency.
Each competency can be defined in levels of increasing complexity, such as for Individual Contributors, Managers, and Executives. Additional competencies can be included for functional areas such as Finance, Sales, IT, and HR.
Clearly articulating the behaviours required for success across the organisation help to drive a more aligned and positive culture. In addition, a future-focused competency framework stimulates organi
sational change and growth. As such, a competency framework needs to align with the organisation’s vision, mission and values, as well as, the organisation’s long and short term goals and objectives.
A Competency Framework provides a platform to integrate human resource activities such as recruitment and selection, performance management, training and development, career development, and succession planning.
Benefits of Competency Frameworks:
- Having a clear understanding of what defines a successful performer will assure you hire, promote, develop and retain more high performers;
- Provides potential employees, current employees and managers with a common language and a shared understanding of the factors critical for organisational success;
- Provides the ‘glue’ for integrating related HR systems and programs to provide a more systemic, unified approach to overall talent management;
- Establishes expectations for performance excellence; and
- Provides a clear foundation for dialogue between managers and subordinates on performance excellence and development.
